Maldivian employee at Vilamendhoo Resort to undergo tests for COVID-19, resort on temporary lockdown

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Tuesday revealed that a Maldivian employee at Vilamedhoo Island Resort and Spa in Alif Dhaalu atoll is being tested for COVID-19.

According to the health agency, work is underway to transfer the employee to the isolation facility in Farukolhufhushi for further testing and monitoring after the individual exhibited symptoms of the virus.

Further, the agency revealed that temporary restrictive measures are in place on the resort island until contact tracing is completed.

Maldives announced its first confirmed cases of COVID-19 late Saturday, after two foreign staff at Kuredu Resort & Spa tested positive for the virus. The resort was quarantined the same day, after an Italian guest who holidayed on the island tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday revealed that two additional expatriates at Sandies Bathala resort, located in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, also tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

Since, authorities on Monday confirmed that two additional individuals on Kuredu Island Resort tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total count to 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Till date, no Maldivians have tested positive for COVID-19.

Authorities on Monday quarantined 16 individuals that came into contact with the Italian tourist who tested positive for COVID-19 during the two days the individual transited in the capital city Male'.

The Italian tourist who holidayed in Kuredu Resort and Spa transited in the capital from March 1 to 2 after the individual was unable to depart as initially planned from Velana International Airport.

The guest tested positive for the virus after returning to Italy and subsequently informed Maldivian authorities.

In addition to Vilamedhoo Island Resort and Spa, Kuredu Island Resort and Sandies Bathala remain under temporary lockdown.
