President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated today that beginning from next year, the government will ensure that due prominence is given to Victory Day.
Victory Day is observed every year on November 3 to commemorate the defeat of an attempted coup in 1988.
In a post shared on social media X today, Muizzu sent felicitations to the public on the occasion and noted that his administration would strive to give special attention to the day so as to convey to the younger generations the import of Victory Day.
There have been criticism from the opposition and some of the public for ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s administration's failure to mark the day during the past five years. In previous administrations, Victory Day was celebrated festively across the country.
The events of November 3, 1988 left 19 Maldivians martyred, including MNDF personnel and civilians.
