President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday declared that the most important lesson from the coup of November 3, 1988, is to identify and deter similar attacks in the future.
The president made the remarks while speaking at the ceremony held to mark the 31st Victory Day of Maldives at Kalhuthuhkalaa Koshi.
He praised the efforts by the soldiers and armed forces since their inception 31 years ago, also highlighting the daring rescue of citizens from the recent fire incident that swept through multiple buildings in Henveiru ward of capital Male' City.
The president called on soldiers to be disciplined and to follow the code of ethics followed by the armed forces. He added that maintaining the highest standard of conduct would be a stepping stone in preserving public trust.
He also praised the soldiers for always being at the forefront and protecting the Maldivian people no matter the task. President Solih stated that several policies were drafted that focused on further enhancing the welfare of soldiers and improving the skills and technical capabilities of the armed forces.
Concluding his remarks, President Solih spoke of the brave soldiers who defended the sovereignty of Maldives and sent prayers to the martyrs who lost their lives. He particularly noted the heroic actions of Shaheed (Martyr) Corporal Hussain Adam, who fought till his last breath to keep insurgents from breaching the army headquarters.
