VP wishes VOM name change to honor broadcast pioneer Ibrahim Manik

Vice President Faisal Naseem has addressed his wish for Voice of Maldives (VOM), the national radio broadcaster, to change its name in the honor of "Summerblue" Ibrahim Manik, a pioneer in Maldivian broadcast services and the former Minister of Information.

VP Naseem declared his wish on Sunday evening, October 22 at a special ceremony held at Islamic Center. At the ceremony, Naseem highlighted the importance of honoring such individuals for their notable achievements.

"I believe, the late Ibrahim Manik is the true pioneer of the broadcast movement in the Maldives. I believe the name of [VOM] should honor him in some sense," Faisal said.

At the ceremony, Naseem recalled his first meeting with Manik and noted he was a friendly man.

"He was a gentle man, and I saw him as someone who was passionate about his work and dedicated himself thoroughly to the cause, he was ready to serve the youth of this country," Faisal added.

In the honor of Manik, his brother-in-law, Abbas Ibrahim had spoken at length during the ceremony.

"He was a unique individual. Not only in his national service, but in family responsibilities and friendships as well," Abbas said.

Manik, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Broadcasting passed away on November 30, 2022.

The ceremony held on Sunday evening on his honor was attended by several state dignitaries and members of his family.
