President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Wednesday that he will submit his application for a second term as president in a few days, and several names are being considered for the position of his running mate, including his current Vice President Faisal Naseem.
After concluding his campaign tour to islands within Haa Alifu and Shaviyani atolls, President Solih spoke to the media stating that he will decide on a candidate for his running mate either tonight or tomorrow upon returning to Malé.
"God willing, we are working to submit my [application] form on Thursday or Friday. Maybe [a new person will be my running mate]. I have not yet made the final decision. I will make that decision after discussing this matter with everyone involved. There is a chance [it could be current Vice President Faisal Naseem]. There is that opportunity. There are new candidates as well," President Solih said.
President Solih emphasized that since they are proceeding with the coalition, this matter needs to be discussed with the alliance parties as well. A decision will be made after a final meeting is held between Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Adhaalath Party.
"Legally, I should get a response within 48 hours after submitting [the application] to EC," President Solih said.
the deadline to apply to run in the presidential election is Monday, August 7. While five candidates have expressed interest to run for office, only former President Abdulla Yameen has submitted his application. However, the Election Commission rejected his nomination papers due to his current prison term. The matter has since been referred to the Supreme Court.
