Maldives President's Office says United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference, will be an important platform to discuss the island nation's sustainable development plans.

Meanwhile, Maldives Vice President Faisal Naseem arrived on Saturday, November 5, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to attend the conference.

The UN Climate Change Conference encompasses the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP17) and the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Paris Agreement (CMA4).

Formal opening plenary of the conference is set for Sunday, November 6 at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center.

Moreover, in line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's calls for the right of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and global climate resilience, Maldives unveiled its plan in 2019 to reach net zero emissions by 2030. The country is expected to detail on its progress of various sustainable projects and initiatives carried since the plan's unveiling, towards reaching the SIDS goals.

During the conference, Maldives Vice President will deliver Maldives' national statement at the conference on Monday, November 7.

"Maldives has led numerous initiatives to address and draw attention to the climate emergency, from participation in multilateral institutions to activities at the national level, with a particular focus on promoting the financial burden of resilience building and climate adaptation for less developed countries," President Office's statement read.
