The Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC), on Saturday, convened under Vice President Faisal Naseem to discuss re-strategizing and strengthening the governments' COVID-19 response.

Although the meeting was chaired by VP Naseem, it is unclear whether future HEOC meetings will be primarily chaired by the Vice President.

The meeting was also attended by acting Minister of Health Mohamed Aslam, in addition to leading health professionals in the country.

Following the public uproar over the corruption allegations revealed by the Auditor General's Office, Minister Ameen also recused himself from all duties until the conclusion of the investigation surrounding the controversial tender for 149 ventilators.

Last week, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also suspended several senior officials sitting on the health ministry's bid committee as well as Financial Controller Ahmed Aslam.

The state dissolved the jointly operated National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), established to handle Maldives' COVID-19 response, and transferred its workings under the newly established HEOC to the Ministry of Health, on July 1.

The island nation now records total 6,564 confirmed and 2,430 active COVID-19 cases, along with 4,012 recoveries and 26 deaths.
