Police stated in Criminal Court on Monday that former vice president Ahmed Adeeb violated agreements with the state.

According to local media Mihaaru news, the state offered, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code, a more lenient court proceeding should Adeeb cooperate in the investigation of the graft scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

As such, the state proposed to refrain from pressing charges carrying a jail term shorter than a pre-defined sentence period.

Under the code, the state is authorized to formulate agreements with alleged perpetrators willing to confess to their crimes.

Following a violation of his travel ban, Adeeb is accused of fleeing the country after signing a confession and agreeing to testify in court.

Adeeb's lawyer Mahfooz Saeed stated that the former vice president maintains his interested in honouring the agreement.

However, Adeeb claims the agreement was dishonoured by Prosecutor General's Office as it appealed a case at Supreme Court while dropping the remaining charges against Adeeb, clearing him from serving a 33-year jail sentence.

The lawyer added that Adeeb's decision to flee the country was due to a perception of danger imposed on his life, as a result of his decision to testify against influential individuals implicated in the matter.

The Hindu reported that the Indian Coastguard escorted Virgo 9, the tugboat aboard which Adeeb attempted to flee on July 27, to the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) during the early hours of Saturday and transferred him to the Maldives Coast Guard.

Indian authorities intercepted the former vice president on August 1 near the coast of Tuticorin Port, Thoothukudi, while posing as a crew member aboard the Singapore-flagged tug.

The Indian government refused to grant political asylum to Adeeb as requested by his international legal team.
