Passenger movements recorded at Velana International Airport (VIA) for January 2022 increased twice from that of the passenger movements of the same month last year.
According to the most recent statistics from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) - which manages and operates the airport venue - passenger movements were recorded at a total of 446,688 during January 2022.
On the other hand, the passenger movements recorded for January 2021 had reached only 257,693.
Statistics also confirm that VIA observed more outbound travelers compared to inbound travelers. As such, the airport recorded a total of 163,908 outbound travelers in comparison with 158,409 total inbound travelers. Additionally, a total of 27,822 passengers had used VIA as transit stops.
Domestic travel indicated a total of 49,971 departures from Male' while a total of 46,578 passengers arrived at VIA during the review month.
While passenger movement showed significant improvement during the review month, this was further reflected in the air-traffic movement as well.
According to MACL, the authority recorded a total of 5,694 air traffic movements in January 2022 compared to a total of 4,009 movements in the same month last year.
From the total air traffic movement, 3,052 movements were international flights and 2,642 were domestic flights.
In addition to this, a total of 26 international carriers maintained scheduled flights to the Maldives in January while 11 airlines operated chartered flights.
Meanwhile, the airport observed a record single-day air traffic movement on Saturday, last week with a total of 839 movements recorded.
