Ooredoo improves internet infrastructure at Velana International Airport

International telecommunications giant Ooredoo, on Friday, revealed that steps were taken to strengthen and improve the company’s internet services afforded to Velana International Airport.

The confirmation was made via a tweet posted from Ooredoo Maldives’ official account, explaining that as tourism arrivals were back on the rise, the company decided to better their internet infrastructure.

Per the tweet, Ooredoo’s efforts are geared at “ensuring a great internet experience” welcomes. visitors to the Maldives.

Ooredoo Maldives’ CEO Najib Khan also made a statement on the social media platform, congratulating the Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation and Maldives Airports Company Limited on the arrival of the 500000th tourist for the year 2020.

Referring to the recent increase in tourist arrivals, for the first time since numbers were ground to an abrupt and unprecedented halt due to the ongoing global COVID19 pandemic, Khan said;

“To support the large arrivals of tourists at the airport, our internet infrastructure is now 3 times [improved] at Velana international Airport”.

Maldives reopened its borders to international passengers on July 15, after nearly four months since the state halted issuing on-arrival visas on March 27. Guesthouses were permitted to resume operations and kick start local tourism on October 15.

Although the island nation has noted a significant reduction in tourist arrivals compared to pre-COVID figures, there has been a gradual increase with the establishment of travel bubbles between Maldives and other countries, as well as greater connectivity in terms of flight operations.

In December, the number of foreign nationals arriving at Velana International Airport within a period of 24 hours, began averaging 4000 tourists per day.
