Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has said on Thursday that it has compiled the Road Carrying Capacity Policy and submitted it to the President's Office.

An official of the Ministry said that advice had been sought from the Attorney General in compiling the policy. It has now been completed and sent to the President's Office to be officially included in the gazette.

The Ministry said that once the policy is published, island councils will have the authority to determine, under its guidelines, the number of vehicles that can be allowed on the specific island's roads.

According to the official, the policy offers a guideline on determining the age of vehicles that can be in use, as well as the total number of vehicles that can be allowed on the streets.

Amendments were brought to the Land Transport Act in 2021 wherein local councils were given the mandate to register vehicles, determine number of vehicles, determine maximum age of vehicles that can be in use in their jurisdictions. Hence, this is a general policy released by the Ministry so as to facilitate all councils to implement this.

As per previous statistics released by the Transport Ministry, 69,000 vehicles were registered in Maldives in the past five years. More than 42,000 of these are registered for use in the Greater Male' region alone.
