Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC), on Wednesday, announced the 72nd and 73rd COVID-19 related deaths in Maldives.

This raises the number of COVID deaths this month to five. The highest number of deaths recorded in a month was 10 fatalities in February.

HEOC announced earlier on Wednesday that the 72nd person to pass away from COVID was an 85 year old woman. She passes away at 1312hrs in the afternoon while undergoing treatment in the DH11 facility.

The 73rd person that passes away was also being treated at the same facility. He was a 50 year old Indian national and passed away at 2044 hrs on the same day.

With the new fatalities, 72 local have succumbed to the virus in Maldives. The remaining fatalities consist of eight expatriates, including six Bangladeshi nationals, one Filipino citizen and one Indian.

So far 26 people have passed from COVID this year.

Currently, Maldives is experiencing a rapid increase in the number of positive cases, with 464 new cases on Wednesday alone. This was the first time the 24 hours daily total raised above 400. Currently, the positivity rate for COVID-19 is above 10 percent.

Maldives recorded its first COVID related death on April 29, 2020.
