President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to waive fines associated with parking stickers.
According to Miuvaan Mohamed, spokesperson for the President's Office, this decision was influenced by several factors, including:
- Complaints regarding the increasing fines for parking violations in areas without designated parking zones in Malé City
- Concerns about the increase in fines for traffic violations year on year
- Increasing non-payment of such penalties due to covid-induced financial change in people's lives
"In light of the hardships experienced by our citizens, the President and the government have opted to offer relief to the people," Miuvaan said.
The government has simplified the process of paying fines for parking stickers and other traffic violations. This includes the possibility of waiving penalties upon completion of a training program, depending on the nature of the violation.
Miuvaan said that if an individual received a fine for offenses such as driving without a valid license, losing their license, or being fined for driving with an expired or damaged license, they would need to attend the training. In addition, if a vehicle was fined for being driven without a license, the fine would be waived upon the successful completion of the training.
These training sessions will be conducted by the police and are expected to be between two weeks to a month. The main objective is to decrease the frequency of traffic violations by raising public awareness of traffic regulations and other social issues.
"This initiative will enhance people's understanding of traffic regulations and promote greater social responsibility," Miuvaan said.
