Acts of defacing and vandalizing the campaign posters of candidates contending in the upcoming parliamentary election have notably escalated.

With the issuance of permits for campaigning after slating the election for April 21, various districts of Male' and Hulhumale' have been flooded with campaign posters.

Vandalizing billboards sporting photos of candidates was common in the past as well. This has once more resurfaced after being repressed for a while and many billboards in Male' and Hulhumale' have been deliberately damaged in recent days.

Although there are sometimes other damages, oftentimes faces of the candidates are cut off from the pictures on the billboards in these acts of vandalism.

Campaign billboards are allowed to be affixed across the city only with the authorization of Male' City Council. Upon request for the permit, the Council will share with the candidates the premises permissible for affixation and requirements of the billboards.

The Council has determined to remove all posters affixed by puncturing poles into the pavements used for pedestrian travel in violation of their policies.
