President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that efforts are underway to register and transfer ownership rights for land plots and flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, and this process will be begin this week.
Under the previous government's Binveriyaa scheme, 9,001 plots were allotted in Hulhumalé 2, Hulhumalé 3, Gulhifalhu, and Giraivaru Falhu in the first round, and registrations were issued to some of the recipients.
In addition to these land plots, there are 13,000 people eligible for flats on the permanent list of the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme announced by the previous government. Before the end former President Solihs' term, 4,000 of them were identified as recipients of flats.
However, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) stopped the allocation of flats after more than 7,000 complaints were filed.
While a decision has been pending in the case, many people have entered the agency in protest even today.
In a post on X, President Muizzu stated that the registration of land and flats will be handed over in line with his presidential promise.
"The Housing Ministry will complete the process of handing over the registrations this week and next week," he said.
President Muizzu further highlighted that the previous government had allocated land and flats from areas that had not yet been reclaimed and assured that the current administration is committed to expediting the reclamation efforts.
President Dr. Muizzu said that the government has initiated the process of reclaiming the second portion of Hulhumalé 3 from Hulhumalé lagoon to provide housing for the people of Malé. The reclamation process for Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Falhu is also underway.
President Dr. Muizzu's housing initiative aims to develop a large city called RasMalé by reclaiming the Fushidhiggaru lagoon.
Although the work has begun, the President reiterated that he would not repossess land given under the previous administration's Binveriyaa scheme or transfer it to RasMalé.
Instead, President Muizzu highlighted the government's plan to reclaim additional land areas from Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Falhu lagoon.
