The large scale land reclamation of Kaafu atoll Gulhifalhu is scheduled for an official inauguration on Sunday, July 02.
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) said that the official inauguration ceremony for the second phase of Gulhifalhu land reclamation project is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The Ministry further added that the event will be broadcasted live from state-run Public Service Media (PSM).
Netherland-based contractor Boskalis was awarded the project without a bid on October 17, 2019.
While the project contractor has said that the entire reclamation project will cost an approximate total of MVR 2 billion, a total of 18 million cubic meters of sand will be filled into Gulhifalhu lagoon for the reclamation. The contractor will also install rock boulder revetments running the coastal length of the reclaimed land.
Speaking about the project, the government said the primary objective of the land reclamation was to develop the new regional commercial harbor in Gulhifalhu. Upon completion of the harbor, all operations and management of Malé Commercial Harbor will be fully transferred to the reclaimed island.
In addition to development of the regional commercial harbor, the government also announced land plots will be allocated to Malé City residents from the reclaimed area of Gulhifalhu.
