The VAM Extraordinary congress, held without any observers from sports bodies, has postponed the association’s elections.

Initially scheduled for this Friday, the elections have been deferred by four days, and will now take place on March 19.

Neither the Olympic Committee, the Sports Council nor the Sports Commissioner's Office representatives were present to observe the Extraordinary Congress held in Solite last night. However, officials from all three agencies were present to observe the FAM's Extra Ordinary Congress held last month.

While the agencies did not attend the VAM's congress, the Sports Commissioner's Office had ordered the election process to be put on hold until the Olympic Committee and the Sports Council met with the VAM's current Exco and made a decision. However, the meeting did not take place.

The association continues with the election process. Mohamed Latheef, the President of the previous term, is running for president in the elections postponed last night. If he is elected he will serve the remaining one year of VAM's current Exco's term, which began in April 2021. Mohamed Ranesh, who was the President, had resigned from his post.

Under VAM's new governing regulations, 15 members make up the Exco. At present, there are only six members. When the other nine vacancies were announced, only one candidate applied for each post. Section 22(b) of the current rules states that if only one candidate applies for a post, they will automatically be granted the position.

Most of the attendees at last night's congress were clubs supporting presidential candidate Mohamed Latheef. Some clubs did not have the opportunity to represent or observe in Congress. The Sports Club City, which claims to have registered with the Congress to represent former coach Ibrahim Rasheed (Satho), was denied a chance. Former General Secretary Mohamed Shafee’s Malsa Sports Club was also denied the opportunity to participate as an observer.

The VAM, however, said both clubs had not completed the required registration.
