Two metal detectors have been installed at Maafufushi prison to prevent smuggling of mobile phones into the facility, revealed Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan today.

In an interview with state media outlet Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Ihusan revealed that phones and drugs are found in almost every cell on average.

He also noted that scam calls often originate from prison cells and that steps are now being taken to curb this activity.

"Last week, we installed two metal detectors. Next month, we will acquire a body scanning machine. We are currently working on this," said the Minister.

He added that after stopping the entry of phones into the prison, the next step would be preventing scams within society.

Minister Ihusaan said that the police and Bank of Maldives (BML) are working in collaboration to achieve this goal.
