Malé City Council has published an announcement seeking a contractor to clear out the graves in Maafannu Cemetery.

The announcement detailed that the council will start accepting bids for the project on 20th August.

It further said that the job would need to be carried out using the contractor's own materials and in accordance with the regulations put forth by both the council and the Islamic Ministry.

A total of 36,153 square feet of land needs to be cleared from the cemetery which is under the purview Malé City Council. This land area is the entirety of the cemetery space.

It is yet unclear why the council is clearing out the cemetery, but the council had previously decided to make a parking zone in the area.

Although the project was started back when incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was the city's mayor, it was later discontinued because the land was not handed over to the council.

Maafannu Cemetery has not had any new burials in many years, and currently has a parking zone in the west area of the cemetery. This parking space was also created after clearing out the graves in the area.
