President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent an official letter to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group leader, Ibrahim "Ibu" Mohamed Solih, congratulating him on his nomination as the opposition alliance's presidential candidate.
MDP approved Hinnavaru MP Ibu as its candidate during the party congress held Saturday, after former President Mohamed Nasheed's recent forfeit of the MDP Presidential ticket due to factors barring his eligibility.
Speaking at Shaviyani Atoll's Bilehfushi on Sunday during an official visit, President Yameen welcomed MP Ibu's nomination, and expressed hopes that the development would allow peace to be restored in the nation.
The President's Office's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali confirmed that President Yameen had sent a congratulatory letter to MP Ibu, but did not disclose further details.
MDP's decision to put MP Ibu forward as the opposition's presidential candidate was also received warmly by Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee. Speaking as the chairperson of all-party talks, Dr. Shainee congratulated the opposition lawmaker, and again called on all political parties to participate in discussions in order to hold an independent, fair, transparent and successful presidential election.
While the joint opposition has agreed to put forward an MDP presidential candidate and a running mate from Jumhooree Party, the alliance has yet to decide on the latter.
