Transport Ministry has ordered the suspension any further leasing of parking spots from Malé.
Transport Ministry of Maldives has ordered Malé City Council to suspend all issuances of private parking slots from the streets of Malé.
In a statement issued, the Ministry said that space on Malé roads have become limited even for public use and that there are significant difficulties in finding temporary parking spaces.
As such, in order to allow all members of the public to be able to use road spaces equally, the Ministry ordered the council to suspend renting out parking spots effective immediately.
The rent of any slot already leased out should also not be renewed, and this has been communicated to the council as well.
Malé City Council initially announced plans to lease 450 parking spots from designated areas on Malé roads. With nearly 1,000 applications submitted for the spots, the council conducted a draw to determine the successful applicants.
