The government is seeking potential investors to develop an airport in Vaavu atoll.

A resolution signed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has formally announced the government's intention to establish an airport in the southeastern region of Vaavu atoll. The resolution outlines that prospective investors are required to provide a minimum funding of USD 5 million (equivalent to MVR 76 million) for the project.

President Solih issued this resolution following his pledge to initiate the biggest tourism project within the atoll. He made this pledge during his campaign visit to Vaavu atoll in July. President Solih added that this project will amplify tourism endeavors in the atoll, which has been experiencing a surge in local tourism, and will also facilitate air transfer.

However, Vaavu Atoll Council has objected to President Solih's decision stating that the project includes the reclamation of Fohtheyo lagoon within the atoll for the purpose of constructing a tourist resort. Fohtheyo lagoon is the largest lagoon in the Maldives.

The council contended that any lease of the lagoon by the state must strictly adhere to the council's regulations governing such arrangements.

The Vaavu Atoll Council's efforts to obtain an interim injunction from the Civil Court in order to delay the lagoon's lease were unsuccessful. The court's decision was based on the council's inability to provide a compelling counterargument that warranted the suspension of the project.
