Establishing a media village with a dedicated office structure for media outlets is among the presidential pledges of President Muizzu.

Speaking at the ceremony to mark Maldives' 59th Independence Day, the President announced that the cabinet had determined how to establish the media village, and said it would be placed at the hotel premises that had previously been under construction by STO.

"Those premises are now repossessed by the government. Some floors of that building will be used to set up the media village. For a small rate, each media will be granted space under some guidelines to run their offices," the President said.

"Studios of different levels will be built there. We will provide the production space and resources needed for TV stations. We will provide never before seen levels of golden opportunities for media there."

The President revealed that work on the media village will be completed within the next year.

STO initially commenced the hotel project with high hopes, but it met multiple obstacles both financially and otherwise, with the project having been halted for many years now. The vast area in Hulhumale' where the hotel was being built remains unused.
