200 hectares of land will be reclaimed from UTF for food security: President

President Muizzu has said that 200 hectares of land will be reclaimed from UTF to expand the agriculture industry and ensure food security. The area will accommodate an agriculture zone to local produce, reducing dependency on food imports.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 200 hectares of land will be reclaimed from Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) near Male' City for the project to reduce food import and ensure the country's food security.

The former administration had decided to issue land plots to residents of Male' City after reclaiming addition land in UTF where a Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) dockyard was being established under an agreement signed with India.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had however revised this decision and intends to operate an agriculture project in the area in collaboration with China.

An agreement was made with the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone (MID) run by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and China Harbor Engineering Company Limited to develop an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ) after reclaiming land in UTF to promote sustainable farming in Maldives.

President Muizzu stated last night that a project has been launched with the aim of minimizing expenses on the import of all food items that can be produced in the country and growing all such produce locally.

"The work has begun to establish self-sufficiency. This administration will establish food security during this tenure," the President said.

The President added that 200 hectares will be reclaimed from UTF, and the project will also include some other agricultural islands. He stated that this will ensure that all kinds of food required by the people can be produced sufficiently.

"Once this import is brought to an end, the economy will be boosted. Our aim is to go a step further and ensure adequate food security for the locals and also produce enough food for the tourism industry," President Muizzu said.

- Establishing a base to train agricultural talent

- Establishing an Agricultural Products Logistics Distribution Center

The AEZ is a special area developed to increase agricultural productivity and promote the agricultural industry through the necessary support and infrastructure.

AEZs play an important role in countries where modern agricultural technology is utilized to ensure food security and boost export revenues.
