Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has said that the Maldives is receiving strong assistance from the United States of America in overcoming the challenges faced in the introduction of PayPal services.

Zameer made these comments while speaking at the ceremony marking the one year anniversary of the establishment of the US Embassy in Maldives.

The Minister highlighted that the efforts to introduce PayPal services is amongst the most promising of endeavours being worked on together with the US Embassy.

He noted that this is amongst one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's key presidential pledges, and said that Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed is also working tirelessly to expedite the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives.

Zameer said that relatively small market in the Maldives poses challenges in the efforts, but said that the US Embassy is extending support to overcome this.

"Introduction of PayPal will present a revolutionary change to the economy, broadening economic participation," he said.

Minister Zameer extended thanks for the assistance provided to the Maldives through USAID and the US Government. He expressed hope that in future, US Visas could also be obtained in Maldives.

Economic Minister Saeed has stated earlier that the proposal for the introduction of PayPal has been submitted last month.

"We are hoping that very soon we can reach an agreement of some kind. I won't say precisely when PayPal can be introduced in the Maldives. However, hopefully, we will be able to bring PayPal to Maldives," Saeed said then.
