Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) declared on Monday that the new administration to be sworn in on November 17 will cater to the needs of all Maldivian citizens.
At a press conference held at MDP headquarters to celebrate the victory of the party's parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the presidential election, MDP's Chairperson Hassan Latheef attributed the achievement to the hard work of ordinary citizens.
Latheef guaranteed that the priority of the joint opposition's government would be to re-establish justice and to maintain, uphold and protect fundamental human rights. He promised the release of all unlawfully jailed politicians, including former President Mohamed Nasheed.
He further announced that Nasheed would return to Maldives shortly, although he did not provide a specific date.
Latheef also expressed his belief that the Elections Commission (EC) did not conduct the election fairly, and declared that the opposition's decisive victory over the current administration was thus remarkable.
Speaking at the press conference, MDP's Vice President Mohamed Shifaz stated that the new administration would be dedicated to bringing about a return to constitutional boundaries, despite the difficulties faced during the campaign period and election.
According to the preliminary results released by EC, President-Elect Solih won the election with 134,146 votes which amounts to 58.4 percent of the total ballots cast, while incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom received 95,623 votes or 41.6 percent of the ballots.
MDP has urged all supporters of the opposition coalition celebrating the electoral victory, to refrain from causing unrest and to maintain order.
