A foreigner arrested in connection with the theft of over MVR 400,000 from under a motorcycle seat in Malé has claimed in Criminal Court today that he was framed.
On the 14th of this month, police arrested a Bangladeshi man named Jahangir Alam in connection with the theft of MVR 442,750 from under a motorcycle seat. He is still being held in custody for this case.
When brought to Criminal Court to extend his detention period, the police presented evidence suggesting his involvement in the crime. The court order states that CCTV footage shows him lifting something from under a motorcycle seat.
However, Jahangir claims that he was framed in a business-related matter. He also states that he did not take money from under the motorcycle seat.
His lawyers told the court that the police have not questioned him about the case and that the investigation is progressing slowly. They also mentioned that Jahangir is a foreigner who is married to two people in the Maldives, has three children, and has been living in compliance with regulations.
The Criminal Court has extended his detention by five days today.
The evidence presented against Jahangir includes CCTV footage and a statement from the owner of the money.
