Police are investigating a case against Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs Abdul Jaleel Ismail for allegedly forging the businesses of Hashim Mohamed, a businessman who passed away in January 2022.

Hashim, originally from Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu atoll, was found dead two years ago.

Hashim’s family accuses Jaleel of collaborating with a Bangladeshi man, who had been managing Hashim's financial affairs, to transfer the businesses under his own name. The family also claims that Hashim's son's signature was forged in the process. The case was filed on September 19.

On September 23, Jaleel reported an argument with others inside a shop, police said. The police have since directed both parties to resolve the dispute through the Civil Court.

According to reports, Jaleel is currently the sole shareholder of Hashim’s extensive business ventures, which he has allegedly been operating since Hashim's death.

Despite the accusations, Jaleel has not yet responded to any of the allegations, Mihaaru News reports.

The case garnered public attention last week when videos emerged showing people taunting Jaleel on the street and inside a shop.
