The United States of America on Monday congratulated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his election win and expressed wishes to work closely with the new government of the president-elect.
The US was one of the most vocal international bodies to call out on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s actions in the past. The superpower had also warned about sanctions for countries that impede free and fair elections.
Moreover, the US had reiterated the demands of several foreign entities to release unlawfully detained political prisoners, even so far as to demand that the government implement the landmark top court ruling of February 1.
A number of foreign countries have congratulated the president-elect, declaring their wish to work with the future government of Maldives. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, India, Sri Lanka and Japan have congratulated Solih since his triumph over incumbent President Yameen.
