The European Union (EU) and nine of its member states have proclaimed that the recent actions of the current Maldivian government are against democratic principles and that it has led to the destruction of democracy while making it powerless.
In a statement released by the countries expressing concern over the situation of Maldives, the EU stressed that the actions of the government are against the Constitution and the international human rights as well.
The statement declared that it is alarming that the parliament was locked up and barred lawmakers from entering with the use of several threats and intimidation.
Noting that an opposition plays a vital role in a democracy, the statement mentioned that the right to protest and freedom of expression should be allowed without any boundaries.
The EU also urged authorities to take immediate actions to sustain their impartiality.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Monday voiced concerns over the political turmoil in the Maldives and called on the archipelago to respect the integrity of Parliament.
While Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Police guarded the parliament gates and held off lawmakers and other public citizens that gathered in the area on Monday, opposition lawmakers eventually forced past police barricades and entered the parliament building, some scaling the walls of the parliament grounds. MNDF and Police SO officers followed soon to forcibly remove the lawmakers from the parliament chambers, ordering the administration staff to leave as well. The forced entry and subsequent removal of lawmakers resulted in various injuries to lawmakers.
