The Criminal Court has sentenced an individual to nine months in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 700,000 for presenting a fraudulent document with the false intention of selling an apartment to two parties.
The court sentenced 37-year-old Ibrahim Nazeed from Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru for the offense.
The court order stated that Nazeed had misrepresented information by creating false documents, indicating that he had taken two floors in an apartment building on long-term lease, with the intention of selling them to two individuals.
One of the victims of the scam had paid MVR 624,000 to Nazeed to rent the apartment for a period of eight years, while the other had paid MVR 150,000 to the culprit for a one-year duration.
The state filed charges of theft against Nazeed, which he accepted during the trial. He further agreed to a jail term ranging between nine to 18 months and signed a confession document. Following his confession, he refrained from making further statements.
In addition to sentencing Nazeed to jail, the court also ordered him to pay compensation, stating that the debt has been sufficiently proven against him.
The Criminal Court ordered compensation of MVR 624,000 for one of the parties and MVR 87,500 for the other.
Previously, Nazeed had also been sentenced by the Criminal Court in a similar case. He had forged documents to falsely claim ownership of an apartment, deceiving individuals into providing money under the false pretense of renting the apartment for four years.
He had accepted this charge as well and was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a fine of MVR 92,216. Additionally, he was ordered to pay compensation of MVR 266,000 to the victimized party.
