The spouse of Nishama Mohamed, the 28-year-old who was found dead in Nolhivaram of Haa Dhaalu atoll, was arrested late on Saturday night.
The police began investigating the alleged homicide on Saturday afternoon.
According to the police, the victim’s spouse, Aboobakuru Faisal of Fenfushi in Haa Dhaalu atoll, was taken into custody under a court order. He had gone to the police station in Kulhudhuffushi city on his own accord, the police said.
The residents of the island suspected that Nishama’s husband might have been involved in her death after he fled to Kulhudhuffushi shortly before her body was discovered. Sources that spoke to Mihaaru news also reported hearing an argument earlier in the day.
Nishama’s body was brought to Malé on Saturday evening for an autopsy.
The police have not made any official comments regarding the incident yet.
