Gordon Andrew Stewart, who was appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) last year, was removed from both positions on Wednesday.

Managing the company that operates the main airport of Maldives, Velana International Airport (VIA) has been temporarily handed over to Deputy Chief Officer of MACL, Ibrahim Thoha.

According to a press release by the company, this decision was made in compliance with instruction from Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB).

MACL thanked Stewart for his service to the company.

Stewart has over 30 years of experience in the aviation and transport industry, having worked in various countries in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, and North America. He was appointed as CEO of MACL on June 28, 2020.

MACL is one of the companies that generates the highest profits in Maldives.

While Stewart was removed from position on Wednesday, UK born Darren Williams was appointed as the new CEO of the airport yesterday as well. He has over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry.

PCB said they instructed to remove Stewart from office as per the President’s Office’s orders. The board said CEO’s and Managing Directors of government companies can be removed as per the government's prerogative.

However, they did not disclose why they chose to remove him from office.
