President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declares that should the opposition win the upcoming presidential election, a coalition-led government would let foreigners invade the country and impeach its independence.

The president made the statement during his speech at a mass gathering held by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives late Friday.

According to the President, the opposition paints a false picture of the situation in the Maldives to garner foreign attention.

He went on to say that this is due to the opposition incapacity to fulfil its pledges made to the people of Maldives.

Stating that the nation has earned the right to stand its ground among the international political arena, President Yameen affirmed that the Maldives does not want to lose sight of such liberties.

The President made the statement referring to threats issued to leading members of government by foreign nations, accusing them of obstructing his electoral rights.

The United States of America recently issued a warning stating that measures will be taken against those who stand in the way of free and fair elections in the Maldives.

The US statement expressed concerns over the oppression of people's democratic rights as the election draws closer.

Meanwhile, member countries of the European Union have also issued warnings, stating that if the situation in Maldives does not improve and if a free and fair election is hindered, steps would be taken again leading members of the government.

Referring to foreign declarations, the president responded by saying that, beyond the issue of such warnings, there is no way the election can be influenced.

Despite his own qualms over the repeated warnings, the President urged people not to be disheartened by the foreign-issued threats.

Further expressing his disapproval, the president claimed that after every change in governance, foreign pressure on Maldives increases significantly.
