Chinese tourist market has become the third strongest source market to the Maldives as of July 30.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, China has replaced the United Kingdom in third place with 91,555 tourists.

After closing its borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, China resumed outbound travel nearly three years later, in early 2023.

Before the pandemic, China had consistently been one of the top three strongest source markets for Maldives. In 2019, China recorded an annual total of 280,000 arrivals, making up 17 percent of the total tourist arrivals for that year.

Earlier in 2023, tourism minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, said that once China resumes its tourist market, the Maldives can expect a 10 percent increase in tourist arrivals. Due to China's fast return to outbound travel, the Maldives government revised its annual tourist arrival target from 1.8 million to 1.9 million.

As of July 30, the top source market for the Maldives is Russia with 126,504 annual arrivals, followed closely by India in second place with 122,375 arrivals. The United Kingdom, which was previously in third place, has now slipped to fourth spot with 89,769 arrivals. China has now taken third place with 91,555 arrivals since its resumption of outbound travels.
