Elections Commission (EC) on Thursday officially registered the People's National Front (PNF) founded by former President Abdullah Yameen after breaking away away from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The Elections Commission granted permission to form the party on November 29 last year. On Thursday, the Commission officially registered the party, with Yameen’s son, Zain Abdulla Yameen, as the founder in accordance with the Political Parties Act.

While the Yameen-led PNF has been officially registered, not a single candidate backed by him was elected in the 20th Parliamentary Elections held on Sunday.

Yameen began efforts to form the PNF on December 10 while under house arrest under leniencies granted during his serving of an 11-year prison sentence for convictions on charges of money laundering and bribery.

The former President has been freed from criminal convictions after the High Court overturned the Criminal Court's verdict of the 11-year prison sentence on Thursday, April 18. The High Court ordered a retrial of the case following Yameen's appeal against the sentences.

Yameen left PPM following disagreements among the party leadership. Yameen's lawyer and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed alleged that the PPM-PNC (People's National Congress) leadership had abandoned Yameen.
