In a week's time, 10 hectares of land have been reclaimed from the Fushidhiggaru lagoon.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's most ambitious project, 'Rasmalé,' which is being developed by reclaiming the Fushidhiggaru lagoon located south of Malé City, began last Monday.
While the first phase of reclamation work is underway, 10 hectares of land have been reclaimed since then.
Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCC) have been awarded the reclamation work, expected to be completed in eight months. A total of 1,153 hectares of land will be reclaimed from the lagoon.
This is the largest piece of land to be reclaimed in the Maldives so far. The land area is equivalent to three times the size of Hulhumalé 1 and 2 combined.
The land reclamation project has been awarded to CMCC without incurring any expenditure from the state budget or Urbanco, by providing 10 hectares of land from Hulhumalé and 60 hectares from Rasmalé to CMCC as part of the arrangement.
The dredger "Filippo Brunelleschi" is being used for the reclamation work. The dredger was brought to the Maldives by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in July of this year. The vessel is 142.5 meters (467 feet) long and 27.5 meters (90 feet) wide, with a hopper capacity (simultaneous loading capacity) of 11,300 cubic meters.
