Branches of Sri Lanka’s Peradeniya and Moratuwa University are set to be established in Maldives.
According to Sri Lankan media Daily News, Sri Lankan Minister of City Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education Rauff Hakeem stated that an agreement was reached with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to establish a campus of Peradeniya and Moratuwa University in Maldives.
Minister Hakeem's statements revealed the plans in his address as the chief guest at the annual sports meet of Yahalatenna Muslim Vidyalaya, Kandy.
The Minister stated that he pitched the proposal to the Maldivian President, while he was visiting Sri Lanka on their Independence Day. President Solih also met with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during the state visit.
“Through this, we get opportunities to expand the higher education sector of our country in the international arena and also uplift the rankings of our universities,”, said Minister Hakeem.
It has been agreed that local students would spend the first two years of study in Maldives and complete the remaining two years in Sri Lanka.
While foreign programs are taught in certain private colleges in Maldives, branches of foreign universities and colleges are non-existent in the country.
The Peradeniya and Moratuwa University, which was established 47 years ago, currently has a student population of 7,000 undergraduate students and 2,500 post-graduate students.
