The Universal Foundation has announced a special scholarship opportunity to honour the late Dr Ibrahim Umar Maniku.
Dr Maniku, the first Maldivian anesthesiologist at Malé Central Hospital, played a crucial role in modernising the anesthesiology department and introducing modern equipment to the hospital.
Dr. Maniku was instrumental in the development of the Maldivian tourism industry and played a vital role in the introduction of several significant industries to the country.
He founded Palm Tree Resorts on Veligandu Huraa in South Male' Atoll in 1987 and played a crucial role in bringing international joint ventures to the Maldives to enhance the tourism industry. In 1989, Dr. Maniku established the Malé Aerated Water Company, which was the first bottling plant to introduce carbonated beverages in the Maldives. His work and contributions, particularly in the tourism industry, were immense.
The scholarship is available to Maldivian nationals who desire to pursue postgraduate studies in medicine at a UK university, with the goal of equipping Maldivian doctors with specialized expertise in areas that are in high demand in the Maldives.
To qualify for the scholarship, candidates must be Maldivian, have completed their MBBS, and have worked in the Maldives for at least two years after graduation. The study programme must be in the field of medicine, at the postgraduate level, and at a university in the United Kingdom. Preference will be given to candidates who choose to study medical specialisation in areas where there is a skills shortage in the Maldives.
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must secure a confirmation letter of acceptance from a UK university and meet the necessary requirements for obtaining a UK student visa. Additionally, candidates must pass a selection interview. Successful candidates are required to commit to working in the Maldives upon completing their postgraduate studies.
The deadline for submitting applications is June 30.
