Foreign minister Shahid meets UN Secretary-General

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid met with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday in the latter's office at the UN Headquarters located in New York, USA.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid expressed gratitude for the Secretary General's support to Maldives, notably during its period of democratic transition. The Minister also briefed the Secretary-General regarding the priorities of the new government.

According to the minister, the two main focus areas of this administration was socio-economic development and reform agenda.

While highlighting the issues of critical importance to the Maldives internationally, Minister Shahid informed the Secretary-General of the initiatives led by the Maldives at the UN. Minister Shahid guaranteed that Maldives would continue to advocate on climate change and other challenging issues faced by small nations.

Secretary-General Guterres congratulated Maldives on its peaceful transition of power and commended its climate change advocacy in global forums.

Foreign Minister Shahid also met and briefed Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the UN Miroslav Jenčaat regarding potential future programs for cooperation.

Minister Shahid was accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mr Ahmed Khaleel, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN and Ambassador to the United States, Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, and senior officials at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations in New York.
