President visits UAE to offer condolences on Sheikh Khalifa’s death

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has flown to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday to convey condolences to its late President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's family.

President's Office said he will return to Maldives tomorrow once the trip is over.

Sheikh Khalifa, 73, passed away on Friday after facing long time health issues. His funeral was held on Saturday.

President Solih decided to bring the Maldivian flag to half mast until Monday to commemorate Sheikh Khalifa's passing.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also signed the book of condolences opened at Jen Maldives in memory of Khalifa. He wrote that Khalifa was a visionary leader who has worked hard for the progress and development of the people of UAE. He said that his services would be remembered by its people.

Sheikh Khalifa has been the President of the United Arab Emirates since 2004. However, since he had had a stroke in 2014, he played a more symbolic role of the president while, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, his paternal younger brother, had been responsible for the administration of the country.

President Solih had extended congratulations to Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday, for being elected as President of UAE.

"I look forward to working with Your Highness’ government to further strengthen the already close ties between our two countries," he said via Twitter.
