President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated a special program titled 'Male' Fehi' which aims to address the issue of congestion and traffic woes in the Male' City.

The Male' Fehi program is organized by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and plans to address congestion in Male' and Hulhumale' in three sectors.

The three sectors are ensuring vehicle registration is brought within the boundaries of the law, controlling vehicle imports, and streamlining the public transport system and promoting road safety.

In the inauguration held last night at Dharubaaruge, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said that at present, vehicles are parked in Male' with no consideration for the public, even in front of hospitals and mosques.

He said that the situation at present allows those importing vehicles to do so without any limit and reap benefits from it, while this ultimately causes increased issues.

Ameen said that things had escalated to this state due to a lack of respect for the law, as well as negligence in regulation.

He said that necessary amendments will be brought to laws and regulations so as to ensure that the import of cars is also a regulated business like any other.

"We will bring an end to Male' streets being as a godown for those engaging in automobile business," the Minister said.

Ameen also assured that the program would result in the Transport Ministry regaining the trust of the public.

Ameen said that the previous practice of submitting a garage letter which was not actually from an existing garage is no longer accepted. Domain sales will also be done under an open bidding process, he said.

"There will be a few who are displeased with these changes, but that is not the general response from the larger public," the Minister said.
