The Maldivian delegation provided recommendations to 10 states during the 34th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) which was conducted at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland from November 4 to 15.
The delegation's active participation in the session was in accordance with Maldives' commitment to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and its mechanisms.
Recommendations were provided to Italy, El Salvador, Gambia, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Fiji, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Slovenia and Egypt as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Maldivian delegation consisted of Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Hala Hameed, Deputy Permanent Representative Hawla Ahmed Didi and First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Maldives to United Nations Office at Geneva Shahiya Ali Manik.
The UPR is a state-driven process overseen by UNHRC which involves a review of the human rights record of all UN member countries. The review provides each state with the opportunity to announce actions taken to improve their respective human rights situations and fulfil human rights obligations.
Aimed to improve the human rights situations in all countries and address violations across the world, the UPR mechanism is designed to provide equal treatment to every country during their assessment.
The Universal Periodic Review Working Group holds three two-week sessions per year. The UPR is currently in the midst of its Third Cycle review which began in 2017 and will conclude in 2021.
Third Cycle review of Maldives will be conducted during April and May 2020 at the 36th Session of the UPR.
