Maldives sends delegation to 42nd UNHRC Session

The Maldivian government sent a delegation to the 42nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland from September 9 to 27.

The delegation, led by Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN Dr Hala Hameed, consists of Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN Hawla Didi, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the UN First Secretary Shahiya Ali Manik, and Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Shujau.

Key topics on the agenda for the ongoing session include the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Northern Rakhine State as well as deteriorating circumstances in Syria and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

National statements will be delivered under the Annual Discussion on Integration of a Gender Perspective, Clustered Interactive Dialogue on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances and Truth, Justice and Repatriation, and Individual Interactive Dialogue with Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

While President of the Human Rights Council Ambassador Coly Seck delivered opening remarks, the opening segment's highlight was the oral update by High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet concerning UNHRC's work and the human rights situation around the world.

She made particular note of the threat posed by climate change and called for strong national and international commitment for action.

UNHRC is an intergovernmental body within the UN system which consists of 47 member states responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
