The Island Council of Haa Dhaalu atoll Nolhivaranfaru has reopened application submission for the 100 social housing units.

The council first opened applications in October 2022, but according to the authority’s President, Abdulla Nadheem, the announcement was rescinded due to discrepancies in the eligibility criteria. Tuesday’s reannouncement comes with the necessary criteria revisions, Nadheem added.

Applications for the state-initiated housing scheme are opened under two different categories, which include the 75 units in the A-Category exclusively designated to locals of Nolhivaranfaru, and the remaining 25 units in the B-Category for locals wishing to relocate to the island.

Eligible applicants are required to submit their forms to the Nolhivaranfaru Island Council office before April 30.

The social housing project was awarded to local contractor Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Private Limited for a cost of MVR 53.5 million. The project commenced in 2011 during the former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.

Though the project was initially contracted to be completed within eight months, it faced interruptions in 2014. The remaining portion of the project was later picked up and completed by Dhonbeyz Private Limited in 2022.
