Two Maldivian men accused of human trafficking numerous Maldivian and foreign individuals were arrested on Thursday.

Criminal Court has ordered Mohamed Waheed, 65, from Male’ and Moosa Fathuhee, 55, from Seenu Hithadhoo, who were arrested on human trafficking violations to be remanded for ten days.

The court order states that police had submitted enough evidence to prove that these two men had committed the crimes they were accused of. A statement given to Police Intelligence by a victim of their alleged crimes and further evidence also support the accusation, the court said.

As Mohamed Waheed is 65 years old, his defence stated that he was elderly and sick, however the court had ordered for him to be detained as well since the defence has not submitted any documents to prove the condition of the accused.

The elderly man has been arrested in connection with human trafficking cases in the past as well. According to the Police he has been trying to intimidate the one of the victims in various ways.

The 55-year-old man's defence told the court that he was accused of human trafficking due to a carrying out tasks that a friend had requested.

While the number of human trafficking cases in the Maldives have increased the government has formulated an action plan to overcome the problem.
