Maldives-China to host first DG level bilateral coordination talks

Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday announced the first Director General level bilateral coordination talks between the government of Maldives and China to be held Thursday.

Focusing on the opening of borders and tourism, the first meeting will discuss cooperation between the two countries on strengthening the prevention of COVID-19, recovery of the economy and additional safety measures.

In reference to the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid stated that "the Maldives-China relationship is anchored on a strong foundation of shared historic bonds".

"The basis of the bilateral relationship between our two countries is the Maldives’ commitment to One-China Policy, sovereignty and mutual respect for territorial integrity".

Hailing the Asian giant as an important economic and bilateral development partner, Minister Shahid further noted Maldives' commitment to collaborate with China in further strengthening bilateral relations.

"Under the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Maldives-China relations will stand strong, vibrant and continue to grow from strength to strength", concluded the Minister.

The Maldives delegation will be headed by Additional Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Shiaan, with the participation of representatives from Ministry of Tourism, Health Protection Agency and Civil Aviation.

The Chinese delegation will be headed by Deputy Director General of the Asian Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yao Wen, and representatives from National Health Commission of China, Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as well as the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
