Ali Ashfaq, one of the most renowned footballers in the Maldives, has been appointed Director General of the official residence of Parliamentary Speaker, Maafannu Muraidhoo.
Mihaaru News reported that Ashfaq was appointed to the position in July.
While he has not officially retired from football, Ashfaq is currently on a break due to the temporary suspension of the football season. However, he continues to participate in smaller tournaments in Male' and other islands. As the former captain of the national football team, Ashfaq is the most successful player in Maldivian football history, both at the national and club levels.
Earlier in his career, Ashfaq worked for Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) before dedicating himself entirely to the sport. He is also one of the highest-paid players in the Maldives.
As the Director General of Muraidhoo, Ashfaq's primary responsibilities include administrative duties, protocol, and liaison work. The Chief of Staff at Muraidhoo is veteran journalist Adam Haleem (Mundoo), who holds the highest position within the state residence.
Ashfaq is a close friend of Speaker Abdul Raheem's son, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal, and often accompanies him on trips.
Muraidhoo serves as the official state residence for the Speaker of Parliament, a decision made following the 2021 assassination attempt on former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
