Addu City Mayor and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member, Ali Nizar, has directed criticism towards the former government for not renovating the Addu City Zone Stadium and has praised the current government.

The current government commenced the redevelopment project of Addu City Stadium for the first time in 10 years. This marks the only instance of repairs since the 2014 AFC Challengers Cup that took place at the location.

During the ceremony to officially initiate the Inter School Athletics Meet at the stadium, Nizar stated that multiple pleas to the former government for the renovation of the stadium were unfruitful.

He said that not even a single coat of paint was applied to renovate the stadium during these 10 years.

"For around 10 years, not even a single renovation was done; this place hasn’t even seen a single coat of paint," said Nizar, who was a leading figure in former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidential campaign last year.

"We made multiple requests during the former government’s tenure that, as this stadium is a valuable asset to Addu City, it should be repaired without leaving it to ruin. However, the former government’s tenure concluded without any sort of action."

Nizar expressed his gratitude towards the current President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and Sports Minister, Abdulla Rafiu, for repairing the stadium in time for this year’s Athletics Tournament.

"I would like to highlight that while we were preparing for the competition, the current government contracted this work as an expedited project and repaired this stadium," Nizar said.

Nizar said that the council had requested both preceding governments to install a synthetic track on the running area circling the grass, and requested the same from the current government as well.

"I request the government to install a synthetic track inside the stadium as soon as possible and provide the chance for athletes of Addu City and the southern province to train in the most ideal way," Nizar requested from the current government.
