Former Home Minister Umar Naseer, along with his supporters, submitted his candidacy form to the Elections Commission (EC) at Dharubaaruge to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

Umar Naseer has selected former Deputy Home Minister Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem) as his running mate. The two have a longstanding relationship, which they believe will enhance their collaborative campaign efforts.

Contesting the 2008 presidential election, Umar Naseer received 2,472 votes. In the 2013 Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) presidential primary, he competed against former President Abdulla Yameen, with Yameen emerging as the winner of the primary election.

Independent candidates must gather a minimum of 1,500 endorsements from eligible voters and make a non-refundable payment of MVR 100,000 to the Elections Commission as part of their candidacy submission.

Candidates who have filed their nominations includes President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim representing the Maldives National Party (MNP), Qasim Ibrahim, the leader of the Jumhooree Party (JP).

Additionally, two independent candidates, Faris Maumoon, leader of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), and Hassan Jameel, who has previously held positions as Deputy Minister of Tourism and Deputy Minister of Defense, have also entered the presidential race.
